Give the team someone to work with
Building a platform for an internal team means thinking about who will maintain it. Preferably before you finish building it.
At Marin County, we act as the lead developer and train the county’s staff. We work with the people responsible for the site, helping them build on the platform and understand how to maintain it.
The county already had developers. They’d spent months trying to deliver a migration while dealing with a platform that made the work difficult. Replacing that platform helped, but there was still a site to migrate and a team learning how to work with the replacement.
That’s where we continue to spend our time. Leading development and training staff as the work moves forward.
The team needs to be able to make changes and get its work done. Our job includes helping them get comfortable doing that themselves.
The measure of the work is whether the team still needs you afterwards.
